Course
Description
This course is
required for all
physics graduate students each semester in residence. The seminar
requirement
insures that all graduate students gain exposure to the general subject
area
and current research topics of physics. It aims to teach the social
aspects of
doing physics.
Assignments and
Grading
Students are
required to attend
at least 70% of department colloquia (7/9, 7/10, 8/11, 9/12 or 10/13).
Department colloquia are held on 3:30 PM on Wednesdays in 227 Gallalee
Hall.
Colloquia held at other times are optional. Students must
also
attend at least one specialty seminar in either High Energy, Astronomy
or Condensed Matter (MINT).
High Energy
seminars are held at 3:30 PM on Friday afternoons in 338 Gallalee.
Astronomy seminars are also on Friday afternoons - for location and
time, please ask an Astronomer. MINT
seminars are held at 2:00 PM Friday afternoons in 204 Bevill. See also:

Seminar
Requirement
Students are
required to give a research presentation. These will be
given either:
1) in the speciality seminar of your choice (see above). After
completion of this part, you have to make sure that a faculty member
will contact me to confirm you gave a satisfactory presentation.
or
2) in
the Graduate Student Association's Research and Creative Activities
Conference (on campus) if available. An abstract
along with a pdf file of the presentation must be submitted
and
attendance at the conference is required. Missing any part of this
assignment
will result in a failing grade.
Attendance
Policy
Students are
expected to attend
as many seminars as possible. Colloquium evaluation forms will be
collected at
each event to gauge your active participation. Students participating
in
off-campus experiments must notify the instructor beforehand and may be
given
credit for attendance in this case. Attending less than 70% of
colloquia will
result in a failing grade.
Code of Academic
Conduct
All students in
attendance at
the University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and to observe
standards
of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars. The University
expects from
its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to
avoid
discipline. Academic misconduct includes all acts of dishonesty in any
academically related matter.
The Academic
Misconduct
Disciplinary Policy will be followed in the event of academic
misconduct.
Disability
Accommodations
Students with disabilities are encouraged to register with the Office of Disability Services, 348-4285. Thereafter, you are invited to schedule appointments to see me during my office hours to discuss accommodations and other special needs.
